Chinchilla Housing

Chinchillas are active, playful, and full of curiosity. Providing the right housing is essential for their health, happiness, and well-being. At Exotic Nutrition, we offer a variety of cage options and starter packages to meet the needs of chinchillas of all sizes and lifestyles.

Cage Size and Design

The bigger the cage, the better! While the minimum cage size is 16″ x 18″ x 16″, larger cages allow your chinchilla to jump, climb, and explore, which is crucial for their physical and mental health.

  • 6-Level Mansion Cage – Perfect for active chinchillas, offering multiple levels, ledges, and platforms to satisfy their love of climbing.

  • Chinchilla Cage and Starter Pack – Ideal for new chinchilla owners, providing a comfortable cage along with essential accessories.

Cages should have solid floors to protect delicate feet—avoid wire floors that can cause injury. A removable pan is helpful for quick and easy cleaning. For tall cages, place ledges and hammocks strategically to prevent falls while giving your chinchilla plenty of room to move.

Temperature and Placement

Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, humidity, and drafts. Temperatures should remain between 60ºF and 70ºF, and never exceed 80ºF in the summer or drop below 50ºF in the winter. When choosing a location:

  • Keep cages away from damp areas and direct sunlight.

  • Avoid proximity to heat sources and drafty windows or doors.

  • Ensure good air circulation without direct airflow on the animal.

  • Protect your chinchilla from outside intruders or hazards.

Chinchillas sleep during the day, so a cool, shaded environment is essential for their comfort.

Cage Setup

  • Floor space: Minimum 1500 cu. in. for a single animal; 2200 cu. in. for breeders.

  • Bedding: A layer of clean, safe bedding covers the bottom of the cage.

  • Hiding space: Essential for your chinchilla to feel secure.

  • Dust Baths: Chinchillas need regular dust baths to maintain healthy fur. We recommend Chinchilla Dust as a safe and effective way to keep your pet clean and happy

Although chinchillas are active, they don’t require excessive exercise space. However, more ledges and platforms for climbing, along with chew-safe toys, will enrich their environment and keep them mentally stimulated.
