Chinchillas are lively, curious pets, but they’re also delicate and can become ill quickly if something’s wrong. Spotting the early warning signs is key to getting them the care they need.

Five Signs of Chinchilla Illness
-
Loss of Appetite & Lethargy
If your chinchilla refuses food or treats and seems unusually listless, it may be unwell. -
Changes in Droppings
Diarrhea, constipation, or a complete lack of droppings can signal digestive issues. -
Weeping Eyes or Runny Nose
Discharge can indicate a respiratory infection or irritation. -
Drooling or Pawing at the Mouth
These are often signs of dental problems, which are common in chinchillas. -
Unusual Discharge
White vaginal discharge, or bloody/mucousy anal discharge, is a serious sign that needs immediate veterinary attention.
Five Tips to Help Prevent Illness
-
Feed a Proper Diet – A high-quality food like Chinchilla Diet with Rose Hips or the Chinchilla Food Starter Package ensures your pet gets balanced nutrition.
-
Provide Fresh Water & Clean Air – Always have clean water available and avoid dusty or stuffy spaces.
-
Ensure Regular Exercise – A spacious habitat, such as the 4-Level Mansion or 6-level Mansion cage, gives your chinchilla room to explore and stay active.
-
Keep Their Space Clean & Dry – Regularly clean the cage and accessories to prevent bacteria and mold growth.
-
Boost Nutrition – Supplements like Chinchilla Booster provide vitamin C and probiotics to support immune and digestive health.

💡 Tip: Chinchillas can go downhill quickly when sick, so if you spot any of these signs, contact a qualified exotic veterinarian right away.

My chinchilla had four babies May 26, 2024, at 1:00pm and my question is how do I know when the runts isn’t getting enough from the mother on feeding wise and what’s the sign of that. I hope you know the answer to this question.
