Mealworms vs Superworms

When it comes to feeding your exotic pets, it’s easy to confuse mealworms and superworms—after all, they look similar and belong to the same beetle family (Tenebrionidae). However, these two feeder insects are quite different in size, nutrition, and care requirements. Understanding these differences will help you choose the best option for your pet’s diet.

🐛 Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor)

Mealworms are one of the most popular feeder insects for reptiles, birds, small mammals, and other insectivores.

Size:
Exotic Nutrition offers three natural sizes:

Our Giant Mealworms are never hormone-enhanced—they’re simply mature larvae that have been raised longer and fed our nutrient-rich Mealworm Chow for optimal growth.

Nutrition:
Mealworms are high in protein and lower in calcium, fiber, and fat—making them an excellent choice for muscle growth and energy.

Storage:
Keep them refrigerated for long-term storage. When stored properly, mealworms can stay fresh and alive for 6–10 weeks.

Color & Texture:
They have a lighter brown, uniform color and a soft exoskeleton, which makes them easy for pets to digest.

Aggressiveness:
Completely harmless—they do not bite or sting.

Availability:
Exotic Nutrition offers Medium Live Mealworms, Large Live Mealworms, Giant Live Mealworms, and Canned Mealworms for convenience.

 Superworms (Zophobas morio)

Superworms are often mistaken for mealworms, but they are larger, more active, and have a tougher exoskeleton.

Size:
Typically grow 2 inches or longer, about twice the size of a giant mealworm.

Nutrition:
Superworms contain higher levels of calcium, fiber, and fat, but less protein, compared to mealworms.

Storage:
Unlike mealworms, superworms must be kept at room temperature—refrigeration will kill them. When stored properly, they can be fed to pets for months.

Color & Texture:
They are darker brown with black tips and a firm exoskeleton, making them harder to digest for some smaller pets.

Aggressiveness:
Superworms can bite and have a small, pin-like spine on their backs for defense.

Availability:
Exotic Nutrition does not sell live superworms, but offers Canned Superworms as a safe, ready-to-serve alternative.

⚠️ Important Note: Don’t Be Misled

Unfortunately, some sellers mislabel or enhance their worms.

  • Some sell mealworms labeled as superworms, or vice versa.

  • Others use hormones to artificially enlarge mealworms to superworm size.

At Exotic Nutrition, we never use hormones—our worms are 100% natural and bulked up using our high-quality Mealworm Chow. Always check the scientific name (Tenebrio molitor vs. Zophobas morio) and size description before purchasing.

🐾 The Bottom Line

Both mealworms and superworms have their place in a healthy diet.

  • Choose mealworms for easy digestion and high protein.

  • Choose superworms for added fat and calcium.

No matter which you select, Exotic Nutrition provides safe, natural, and nutritious feeder insects your pets will love.

Hi

Xenia_

Some company told me that mealworms have a harder exoskeleton than superworms. I think that’s a mistake. Anyways, thank you very much for posting this about mealworms VS superworms.
