Benefits of Flaxseed

Flaxseed is a great supplement used to increase the nutritional value of your chickens’ eggs. It’s cheap and easy to add to your regular feed or treats, and has great benefits for the eggs your flock lays.

Flaxseed is very nutritious and is high in Omega-3 fatty acids. When your chickens consume them, these Omega-3s get passed on to their eggs, resulting in eggs that have an increase in polyunsaturated fats and decrease in saturated fats.

These eggs have 6 - 8 times the regular amount of Omega-3s found in eggs, which is equal to eating about 4 oz. of fish. This is especially beneficial because Omega-3 fatty acids are important for heart health, but it can be difficult to eat the recommended amount on a regular basis.

To increase the amount of Omega-3s in your chickens’ eggs, add whole flax seeds to their scratch or treats. You don’t have to worry about grinding them up like you would for human consumption because the chicken’s gizzard will grind them up. It’s also better to offer them whole because they start to lose their nutritional content once they’re ground up.

It’s best to use flaxseed as a supplement, because even though it’s nutritious, too much can result in a strong egg flavor. It’s recommended to supplement a maximum of 10% of the diet with flaxseed, and you should offer it daily in order to see results. For an easy way to add flaxseed to your chickens’ diet, you can use Chicken Ecstasy, which contains flaxseed along with many other nutritious ingredients.
